Yippee, getting back into the groove again. Parents are doing well, husband has recovered from his surgery, I've done everything I can to prepare for the renovation to the house so I can spend a little me time behind the camera and playing with PSE. There was one day out in Arizona where it rained, caught this with my little P&S before heading to the hospital. One of the topics of conversation when I got to the hospital was the rainbow.

139 Hands
I have flown out of town as both of my parents managed to wind up in the hospital earlier this week. Yesterday my Dad was able to get in his wheelchair and go down the hall to visit with my Mom. It was excellent medicine.
And I would just like to whine one minute and say I hate dealing with a 3 time zone change!

A Blue Heron had staked out the small area of land by some cypress trees. I no longer have my fish pond; in reality it was a heron feeder so I don't have one visiting my backyard anymore. I do miss him.

The curvy neck of the American Anhinga aka the snake bird. Sitting, drying his wings by the side of pond. Often see them with the winds spread wide. They are a southeastern bird. They dive into the water for their food.

Taking Jessica Sprague's Frame Ups and Special Effects Class. I don't usually do a lot of processing on the photos for this challenge but this was an exercise in some different techniques. I started with Jeff Perry's faux HDR, then added a frame and texture from House of 3.com (courtesy J. Sprague) and a texture from Skeletal Mess. Messed around with blend modes.

192 Musical Instrument
This is "Air Guitar", it is a sculpture in Cary, NC where I was visiting with my daughter. It was done by Mike Roig. They had a contest and there were some wonderful pieces. Most of them were for sale but were out of my price range. Rachel and I got up early one morning to run around taking photos. Had a lovely time.
After spending a few days with her (& my laptop crashed again) DH and I went up to Rhode Island to see his brothers and then to Pennsylvania to see my sister. After we got back I spent another two hours with the Dell tech to get up and running. Still have a couple of issues to get fixed but they are minor. And I was promised that this would fix the problem. So now we are trying to get caught up and all the service and doctor's appointments done. I have to get all my photos loaded back onto the computer. A little overwhelmed with all the stuff that needs to be done. We have only been home three weeks total out of the last ten. Will be playing catch up. Think we are home for at least a couple of months.

41 Canine Companions
This is Gus, he is a long haired chihuahua that my parents rescued. After a shakey start he has become their "laugh a day". My dad takes him for a long walk on the weekend up to the "farm" where Gus and the goat have become friends. On warm days Gus knows where to find the shade, and has no problem leaving the rest of baking in the sun. Since it is usually very hot in Phoenix they keep his hair clipped short.

278 Shades of Gray
The U.S.S. Alabama, we did not go on ship as DH is in a wheelchair, but we ran around the rest of the park. And we met Colonel Glenn Frazier who was signing his latest book, Hell's Guest. He was featured in Ken Burn's documentary, The War. Col. Frazier survived the Bataan Death march. A very fascinating gentleman who donates a lot of the profits from his book to the restoration and maintenance of this park.

Or both. A group of backyard railroad enthusiasts open up their back yards and railroads a couple times a year in Phoenix. They don't charge anything but they request donations. All the donations go to Phoenix Children's Hospital. This is the Wild Eagle Railroad in the backyard of the owners of Eaglewing Iron Craft.

323 The Wild Side
My neighbor came over yesterday afternoon and told me to grab my camera, that there was a large raccoon in his tree. He got tired of us taking his picture in the tree and came down. I snapped a couple when he started heading my way and I skedaddled up the driveway. He then went across the street and back across, up my driveway and then into my backyard. He took a drink out of the bird bath, wandered around a little and then took off across the fence to the neighbors. We were cautious in case he was rabid but he showed no signs of that.

And a very scary road it was. This is day 3 in the road trip and we ran into terrible head winds that were blowing dust & dirt. Visibility for the most part was never too much worse than this. There were a couple of times we thought we might have to stop. As I do all the driving I had the spouse snap this picture (it was a two hands on the wheel for a few hours). He was learning how to use the little p&s on the ride out. We have some great shots of the headliner, mirrors and his pants.

188 Monuments or Memorials
Day 2 of road trip; we stopped at the Camp Holloway Memoral Wall in Mineral Wells, Tx before heading over to our hotel in Eastland. We were at the dedication last November. My husband is a Vietnam Vet who was stationed there in 1962 before it was named Camp Holloway. Mr. Holloway was a helicopter pilot who was their first casualty. We found out last summer that Mr. Holloway's sisters actually live close to us and we meet one of them for occasional dinners. This is a copy of the memorial that was built in Vietnam. At the end, all of the plates with the names were removed and sent home but over time were lost. They will be dedicating a copy of the Wall the end of May and then I believe work on a museum will be next.

13 Architectural Details
On day 2 of our road trip, we went through Weatherford, Texas. The Parker County Courthouse was built in 1886 and restored not too long ago to it's original state. The Seth Thomas clock was installed in 1897. It is in the center of the traffic circle and it is a beautiful building with lots of interesting details. Did not have time to stop on this trip but hope to on the next trip through.

A wonderful classic Chuhily piece at the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix. My Mom got us reservations for a perfect afternoon in the gardens. It was in the low 80's and just a beautiful day to enjoy the glass and cactus. Phoenix hit their first triple digit temperatures the next week.

273 Seeds
I try to keep some milkweed growing in an inconspicious area in the back yard. Once the monarchs lay their eggs and the little caterpillars emerge the plants are eaten to the nubs.

I don't often actually see a seed pod. I hope to start some pipe vines this year and another passion-flower vine for the gulf fritillarys, zebra long-wings and pipe-vine swallowtails.

251 Razor Sharp
After doing transparent I suddenly had inspiration for razor sharp. This is one of my rotary cutters that are used with these transparent rulers and special mats. It made me queasy to set the cutter down with the blade cover open as that is not wise. There are special gloves you can buy to help prevent any accidental finger removal or other emergency room visits.

This is a box for sewing/embroidery accessories that my Mom made for me a few years ago. It has a top that holds the sides together as a box. My "light box" is really just a couple of sheets of poster board laid on a table in front a window that has a light white curtain. It was overcast yesterday and light coming in was pretty good as I didn't turn on any other lights in the room. I do plan on building a real light box once we get back from our road trips.

129 Green
Saw this little green anole running around this evening. There seem to be fewer of them each year. This is the only anole native to the U.S. Unfortunately there are many non-native anoles here that are threatening the green anole's existence. The green anoles are often called chameleons because they will change colors when stressed.

We walk by Rotary Park most mornings. It is a very small park across from the middle school and golf course. They have announcements of various local events and this morning I noticed a World's Festival. And as most of you probably know there are Rotary Clubs world wide; they are an international group of service clubs. Service Above Self is their motto.

151 Home is Where the Heart Is
We do not see too many turtles here, but this one was under a bench in our front yard this morning. Saw his head when I first walked out and thought for a second that we had a snake curled up under there. This sweetie headed to the backyard, I had to remove him from the shed and then he headed over to a shady area under some ferns.
I took a short break from the blogmonster, have a lot to take care of before we go on a 3-4 week road trip.

300 Spring
I love spring, the moderate temperatures and the orange blossoms. The fragrance is wonderful and I really love to sit next to the tree and relax. Actually have not been able to do so for the past couple of days as the winds are blowing the smoke from some of the wildfires so it's been ghastly outside. A little rain this morning and they say it has helped a little. I was also a little worried as I hadn't seen the bees but they showed up yesterday to do the pollination dance!

358 What's Inside?
I've had aloe vera plants growing in my back yard for many years. Inside those fleshy leaves is a lovely gel that relieves discomfort from minor burns. Which is why there is a leave that has been cut. They did suffer some freeze damage as I forgot to cover them during our three freezes. They will bloom later in the year with a very tall stalk with small orange flowers.

74 Dangerous
Was pruning the freeze damage including the bougainvilleas. I've had to prune back the one in the front yard after a thunderstorm a few years back, after tropical storm Fay last August and after another freeze. I think that after every pruning that the thorns get longer and meaner. Sometimes I don't even realize I've been jabbed or scratched until I'm cleaning up. Have to use calamine lotion as I have a slight contact allergic reaction to a lot of plants.

I like to take my morning walk early as the sun is coming up. It is already in the 60's in the mornings now and once it gets in to the wet season it will be in the 70's and the humidity will be ghastly. So I am really enjoying the walk now.

348 Vapor

Had to add another one; this one was taken earlier than the one below. There were some clouds that we were worried were going to block our view but they had broken up nicely. The one below shows the booster rockets falling. I'm afraid it was hand held so they are a little oddly shaped.

325 Things That Go
I live about 60 miles from the Cape so we can watch the shuttle launches from our house. We don't get the roar or vibrations but we still enjoy. Night launches are always very dramatic but last night's was around sunset and it was stunning. There were a few clouds but it didn't block the view for very long. The vapor trail turned quite orange. We could see the booster rockets fall very clearly. There is quite a bit of noise in this; for some mind-numbing reason I was totally not prepared before it went up.

The vase was a Christmas gift from my daughter. I am very fond of ceramics and she likes to check out North Carolina potters. This vase is from Lakewood Pottery in Siler City, NC. It's beautiful and it was a challenge to get the lighter blue glazing without getting a lot of other reflections.

One of the American Robins passing through. They are often with Cedar Waxwings who tend to be a bit shyer. It's always a pleasure to see them although the strawberry farmers prefer they keep their visit very short. They like to taste each strawberry in the fields.

307 Stuck
I am fond of the different air plants that stick themselves to the trees here. This one is stuck to one of my favorite crepe myrtle trees that has beautiful bark. Seems like I took this a very long time ago as it hasn't rained here in a while. While we are in our dry season, our rainfall is below average and brush fires are becoming a common occurance.

351 Warnings (Morning Walk)
This was taken during the week as the light was blinking for the school zone. For the most part it seems like most drivers to obey the warning here. The police do their radar thing for the first week of school and then occassionally come back for a reminder. I do find it sad that some people need the threat of a ticket & fine to slow down for a very short distance.

342 Underneath (Morning Walk)
A neighbor down the streeet has a huge old oak with a mass of azeleas planted underneath. Hard to believe with all the cold weather but spring is coming. We were in the 80's yesterday and today it will only get up into the lower 60's with hopefully some rain coming through.
